Gong Xi Fa Cai Happy Chinese New Year 2020!

The Year of the White Metal Rat.

The Chinese New Year has more than 4,000 years of history and is the longest holiday of the year in China. Experts say the Metal Rat Year is going to be a strong, prosperous, and lucky year. Everyone will show determination regarding their goals, aspirations, and even their hobbies.

In 2020, Chinese New Year begins on January 25th and ends February 8th. During this time it is Chinese culture to become aware of what we say and do to ensure fortune and health for the coming year. Formed over thousands of years, these taboos embody the beliefs, wishes and worries of the Chinese people. Here's some tips that are part of this cultural celebration.

1. Do not say negative words. Obviously its best to avoid negative words as much as you can and try to speak positively for a healthier approach to life.

2. Do not break ceramics or glass. If a plate or bowl is dropped, immediately wrap it with red paper while murmuring auspicious phrases. After the New Year, throw the wrapped up shards into the trash.

3. Do not clean or sweep. During the actual celebration, cleaning or throwing out garbage may sweep away good luck. Some say not to even take a shower on Chinese New Year's Day!

4. Do not use scissors, knives or other sharp objects. In olden times, this was to give women a well-deserved break. Nowadays the Chinese believe sharp objects in general will cut your stream of wealth. Even hair cutting is taboo and forbidden until Lunar February 2.

5. Avoid fighting and crying. All issues should be solved peacefully. Make peace with your neighbours. This is to ensure a smooth path in the new year.

The Chinese New Year is celebrated every year through sumptuous and colourful festivities.

At CompMed we wish you and your loved ones a happy, healthy and prosperous new year!
